Portland depended on low tech industry for much of it's early life. Wood products, shipping and steel products were mainstays of it's economy until the 1970s. When those industries began to fade after the 1950s Portland suffered and declined. One of the many success stories in Portland's recent history is it's transition from a fading industrial city to the thriving city it is today. There are lots of remnants of Portland's industrial past, especially along the Willamette River North of downtown.
