Georgetown South Carolina

This (terrible) picture, taken around 1993 is of the only blast furnace I've seen in the South outside of the Birmingham Alabama area. This furnace has been torn down but most of the mill around it is still standing and operating. The mill was built in 1973 by a German firm and has changed hands several times since. Most of the industrial economy in Georgetown has traditionally revolved around wood products with steel being a recent and short lived addition. Georgetown has been attracting an increasing number of tourists to it's nicely preserved historic center.
