Volcano, California

Volcano is a small 1849 gold rush town about 15 miles away from the main Highway 49 gold rush touring route. Volcano's population peaked in the 1850s at several thousands and today has a population of just over a hundred (115 - 2010 census). There are some interesting ruins of stone walled buildings on Volcano's main street- one of which has been converted into an amphitheater. Volcano has a beautifully restored and operating circa 1862 hotel (The Saint George Hotel) and claims to have the oldest theater in California (The Cobblestone Theater). A trip to Volcano makes a nice detour if you're checking out gold rush towns along 49. It's about 20 minutes Northeast of Jackson and is relatively quiet and undeveloped compared to nearby historic towns such as Jackson, Sutter Creek and San Andreas. Mokelumne Hill is another nearby similarly interesting and underdeveloped historic gold rush town.
