Waterbird Regional Preserve, Martinez California

Waterbird Regional Preserve is a nice little park near Martinez California. The preserve includes a grassy hill, small lake and marsh. I visited the preserve mostly because it has an unobstructed view of the eastern side of the Martinez Shell refinery. It's a nice little park though and as advertised there are lots of birds. The park has bathrooms, a picnic area, benches and a short walking path. The park gate closes at sundown but it's a one way gate with tire spikes that allows people to leave who stay late. I was the only one who stayed to watch the sunset when I was there in July 2012. As the sun began to set I was attacked by swarms of biting flying ants.
