These pictures were taken in SOHO, Tribeca, Alphabet City and the Lower East Side in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These neighborhoods have been transformed to an almost unrecognizable degree over the last 30 years. The phenomena of gentrification driven by creative types first appeared in the US in Lower Manhattan. And it is in Lower Manhattan that this kind of gentrification has achieved the most radical transformations. Today, most of lower Manhattan is a sanitized playground for the very wealthy.
