Atchison, Kansas
Atchison, Kansas
Atchison is a nice old town on the Missouri river. It was founded in 1855 and has a good amount of surviving 19th century homes and buildings. It's only 24 miles from Saint Joseph and worth a visit if you like historic towns. Atchison's current (11,021) population is lower than it's population was in 1880 (15,105). It's population peaked in 1910 at 16,429. There is a lot of agricultural-industrial activity and other industry in Atchison. It doesn't seem economically depressed at the moment and actually gained population between the 2000 and 2010 census. Atchison has a fairly well preserved commercial district and a lovely neighborhood of 19th century homes on the bluff just North of downtown. Atchison also has a really nice park on the river bank downtown.
