Austin Nevada

Austin Nevada was a silver mining town founded in 1862. Austin's peak population was close to 2,000 sometime around 1880. Today Austin has a population of 192. There are several stores that cater to travelers and tourists, a motel and a gas station in Austin. It's an interesting old town and along with Eureka, one of the few places to stop along highway 50 as it crosses the desolate center of Nevada. The ruins of Stokes castle are on a hill high above town. The castle was built as a vacation home in 1897 and is currently fenced off and on private property.
